走在繁華的逢甲商圈，處處高樓林立，卻有一座百年歷史的「廟」莊嚴地座落其中，看起來氣勢十足！但它可不是一般的廟宇喔！
「家廟」是古代人為家族祖先建立的廟，是祭祀祖先的場所，也是家族成員感情交流、共度時光的地方。而張廖家廟是兩個姓氏的結合，立有「生廖死張」的傳統，就是「在生姓廖，死後姓張」的習俗。
走入張廖家廟，可以看到建築壁面、柱子幾乎是黑色，家廟裡的裝飾藝術，有生動的動物、特殊的紋飾，象徵著不同的意涵，代表了家族之間凝聚彼此的力量，也展示了師傅精湛的工法與台灣古老建築之美。

I find that it looks like the traditional building in my great-grandfather's house at the countryside.

Wow! I find the walls here are all black. Isn't black unlucky? Most of the temples I've seen before are red.
哇！我發現這裡的牆壁怎麼都是黑色的？黑色不是不吉利嗎？我之前看過的廟宇大部分是紅色的。
In fact, people in the old times used red walls and black walls to differentiate between Gods'temples and ancestors'family temples. The black walls mean people attend to the funeral rites of parents carefully. So, the walls of the family temple are black.
其實啊，以前的人會用紅牆與黑牆，來區分神明的廟與祖先的宗祠，黑色的牆壁代表著慎終追遠的意思，所以祖厝的外牆才都以黑色為主喔！

600年前，張愿仔為了躲避災難，入贅娶了廖家的女兒並改姓廖。但他同時也答應，死後要恢復張姓。他的後代就這樣承襲「活著姓廖，死後姓張」的傳統。
