綠川是臺中市人文發源地，自清代開始有移民聚居，它最初沒有名字，在1912年日治時期，因河岸青翠綠映的美景而被命名為「綠川」，並沿用至今。它曾因汙染面臨危機，經過整治規劃，又成為民眾休閒的好去處。
沿著綠川漫步，除了百年的櫻橋、新盛橋外，最具特色就是紅色瓦牆砌成的「宮原眼科」，內部陳列各種魔法書包裝而成的伴手禮。1927年建的眼科醫院，撐過921地震，現在搖身一變成了冰淇淋店！不僅滿足舌尖味蕾，魔幻般建築也讓眼睛大吃冰淇淋！
綠川旁另一個地標就是「東協廣場」。它前方有個小金字塔，這地方是東南亞移工和新住民的聚集地，是個充滿多元文化和活力的特色商圈，獲得「臺中小東南亞」的稱號。這裡的異國風情，是探索臺中市多元文化的重要場所。
