1908年，總督府為了慶祝縱貫鐵路(railway)通車，特地邀請閑院宮載仁親王從日本來臺主持通車典禮，並在綠川流經形成的日月湖(Sun Moon Lake)間建造湖心亭，讓親王到此休息、觀看表演。湖心亭因此聲名大噪，也被視作臺中意象的代表。
臺中公園(Taichung Park)內擁有豐富的歷史遺跡，有古色古香的望月亭(舊大北門城樓屋頂)(Wang Yue Pavilion)、更樓(gatehouse)、砲台山等景點，來到臺中公園不僅可一窺舊城昔日風貌，亦可漫步於綠蔭之中，感受歷史與文化的交融。
