臺中車站是全臺唯一三代同堂的火車站。
1908年臺灣縱貫鐵路通車，因為臺中發展快速，很快的第一代車站就不敷使用了。1917年，第二代火車站完工，儼然成為當時中部政治、文化、經濟的樞紐。車站主體使用紅磚、白色洗石子，屋牆上的雕刻是以臺灣水果作主題，樑柱上也都有精美雕飾。一直到2016年，鐵路高架化通車，第三代火車站啟用，第二代火車站才結束服務，邁入歷史。
第三代的臺中火車站，外觀看起來像是一隻展翅的蝴蝶，車站採用自然的通風和照明，帶入綠建築環保理念，同時也保存地面上這些過去發展的軌跡，能夠看到整個臺中的鐵道進化，很符合永續城市的概念。
