大茅埔圳（穿龍圳）不僅提供了農業灌溉的需求，也是保護大茅埔庄重要的建設，像護城河一樣防止原住民族的侵擾，現今僅剩部分區塊可見護城河。水源從軟埤坑溪越域引水，為了不破壞屋背山的風水，只能繞路從牛頭前方開洞，水源位置從天公廟，通過隧道，就像繩子穿過牛鼻。
此水圳開鑿初期並不順利，時常有潰堤發生，直到建立了水利伯公廟，前方的一根天然石柱，看起來好像把牛拴住一樣。
穿龍圳兼具防禦、灌溉功能，與大茅埔的生活息息相關，在水圳發現代表水質清澈的生物，更是對大茅埔農業的安全保證，這條水圳就像大茅埔的命脈，川流不息的延續下去。
