日治時期，總督府為了尋找雲霧中珍貴的檜木林，進入傳統泰雅族部落的獵場與耕地，來到了臺中和平區的八仙山。當時，日本政府測量本地高度大約是舊制的8000台尺，便以日語中的八千「はっせん」來命名，因為相近於「八仙」的發音，便一直延續至今。
來到八仙山林場，你可以從神社、紀念碑、國小遺址，想見當時林場的盛況。當然，還有當時依照山勢所建造、坡度達33度的「伏地索道」遺址，當時用來運載檜木通往豐原。雖然大多數建築設施歷經颱風、水災、地震的侵襲，加上年久失修而逐漸消失，但這裡仍保留了許多珍貴的舊照片與歷史遺跡，走一趟八仙山，就如同翻閱了一部臺灣林業史。
